MANILA — “Marina,” the pioneering fantaserye on local television, is making a splash on social media 15 years after the mermaid character portrayed by Claudine Barretto first charmed Filipino viewers.

There’s been no announcement of a sequel or a remake from ABS-CBN, which produced the series, but fans found an inkling of possibility on Tuesday after actress Bela Padilla made known her intention to audition for the title role.

“Can I audition for this?” Padilla tweeted in a reply to ABS-CBN Films’ Star Cinema, which ran an online poll on which actress “would make a splash as Marina.”

“It’s definitely a role we’d love to see again,” goes the poll description, which some fans took as a tease of plans to revive the original concept by the late director Wenn Deramas.

Padilla’s tweet, seen by her nearly 1 million followers, garnered approving comments, with some noting the role fits her given her frequent visits to the beach.

Other responses, both on Padilla’s and Star Cinema’s tweets, suggested other actresses who could succeed Barretto, including Julia Montes, with whom she has been frequently compared, and Julia Barretto, the original Marina’s niece who followed in her footsteps.
