Motorists who travel through the North Luzon Expressway may be in for another toll hike next month.

Speaking to the media at an event on Thursday, Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) Executive Director Alvin Carullo said the review of NLEX Corporation’s application for a toll increase is already in the advanced stage and may be tackled during the TRB’s upcoming board meeting.

The NLEX also implemented a toll hike in June of 2023, but it was only allowed to collect half of the periodic adjustments it was entitled to for 2018 and 2020. This would serve as the second tranche of the increase, if approved.

Carullo said the possible additional payment will be the same as last time: an extra P7 in the open system and P0.36 per kilometer in the closed system.

“The toll rate increase was divided into two, 50 percent for 2023 and 50 percent for 2024,” said Carullo.

Despite the burden to motorists, Carullo said the board also has to consider the financial situation of toll operators.

“We cannot deny all the petition for toll fee increase precisely because they also have to comply with their obligations to their lenders,” he said.

Aside from NLEX, the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) and the Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway (MCX) also have pending toll hike proposals.

But Carullo noted that the TRB will also weigh the potential impact of another toll hike on the country’s inflation.

“The board members are well aware of the inflationary situation and it may result to a delayed implementation, if ever,” he said.
