MANILA -- Billionaire Lucio Tan's namesake son was appointed president of PAL Holdings, the parent firm of Philippine Airlines, the holding company said Tuesday, as the Tan family took greater management control of the flag carrier.

Lucio "Bong" Tan Jr. replaced Gilbert Santa Maria, as PAL Holdings president. Santa Maria will stay on as Philippine Airlines president, the airline said.

At a board meeting last Oct. 28, Santa Maria presented a 90-day report and turnaround plan for PAL. His presentation was "well received by members of the board and Chairman Lucio Tan." PAL said.
