San Miguel's planned airport in Bulacan gets LGU backing

MANILA - Bulacan's provincial government on Thursday said it was giving its full support to the international airport proposed by San Miguel Corp, which will be built in the province.

In a statement, Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado said "the province will do its best to support" SMC's airport bid.

Bulacan's Provincial Board also came out with a resolution supporting the National Economic Development Authority's decision to approve the Bulacan airport project.

Vice Governor Daniel Fernando, said the Bulacan airport will complement the creation of the new Clark Green City.

Bulacan officials expect the project to create more than a million jobs and revitalize towns that are hard hit by floods and calamities.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez however raised several issues about the proposed Bulacan airport.

Dominguez earlier said the SMC project needed to be studied over how it may affect the Clark International Airport being built by the government.

He added that the real estate value of New Clark City, estimated at $14 billion, may also be affected.

Besides SMC's proposed airport in Bulacan, A consortium led by the country's richest man, Henry Sy, and media magnate Wilson Tieng are also looking to build a new airport in Sangley Point, Cavite.

A consortium of seven of the country's biggest conglomerates meanwhile proposes to upgrade the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, while a Filipino-Indian group also submitted a proposal to rehabilitate NAIA.
