MANILA -- PLDT Inc's mobile unit Smart said Wednesday it would provide free WiFi access in 5 areas in Manila under a deal it struck with the capital city's government.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and PLDT President Manuel Pangilinan met at city hall on Wednesday to discuss the initiative.

Free WiFi can be accessed for 30 minutes per day in the following areas: Manila City Hall, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Universidad de Manila and Museo Pambata.

“This partnership will empower Filipinos across the city who can use it to keep in touch with their families or connect their workplaces and further their businesses,” Smart said in a statement.

Last year, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Free Internet Access Program Act that sought to establish free WiFi hot spots in public areas.

In June, Google expanded its free WiFi stations to 400 from 50.
