MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday ordered an investigation into courier company J&T Express, amid complaints from consumers and a viral video showing cargo mishandling.

In a streamed public address, Duterte said he is ordering the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP), as well as the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the complaints against the company.

He also ordered the Bureau of Internal Revenue to look into the company's finances.

"May isa dito na madalas akong makatanggap ng complaint. You better shape up. But I'd like you to know that I am ordering now, because CIDG is listening, the NBI to investigate you, at ang BIR to look into your finances," Duterte said, referring to the courier company.

"Yung mga padala, nawawala. Tapos pagdating, pinapalitan, wala nang laman," he added.

Duterte also referred to a viral video showing the company's warehouse personnel allegedly deliberately mishandling parcel.

The workers in the video placed goods on the ground and were not wearing protective gear required during the coronavirus pandemic.

If the company is proven guilty of the complaints against it, Duterte said he will shut it down.

"It's not really one or two incidents na itinapon ninyo. Hindi masyado 'yung sa handling of the cargo. It's the lost cargo or cargo na pinalitan ninyo. As a courier, a company registered as a courier, I would like, because of so many complaints, but I will close you down," he said.

Duterte encouraged those who have bad experiences or complaints against the company to report to the nearest police station to help in the investigation.

J&T Express said it was already investigating the viral video incident.
