"The biggest use for water is actually watering the garden. As people have cars, they water more cars. Actually, drinking is only a small portion of the use of water," Dela Cruz said in an exclusive interview with ANC's The Boss.

Manila Water is working with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System to draft a "water security roadmap" for the metropolis, he said.

The company's treatment plant in Cardona, Rizal will be completed by end of 2018 and it will treat the water drawn from Laguna Lake before distribution, he said.

Demand for water per day is 50 million liters in Metro Manila alone and supply is currently at over 1.6 billion liters, he said.

Manila Water draws its supply from La Mesa dam in Quezon City, but with the reservoir inching critical levels, the company is lowering water pressure at off-peak hours, he said.
