The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has issued notices of violations to 90 establishments in Siargao, Surigao del Norte after its crackdown on erring Boracay businesses.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu earlier ordered the Environmental Management Bureau to inspect restaurants and resorts following his visit in Caraga in February.

The agency found out most establishments failed to secure an environmental compliance certificate, violating the country's Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, or the Environmental Impact Statement System.

The regional environment officers also noticed inconsistent water quality, improper solid waste management, and inadequate drainage systems, among others.

DENR-Caraga Regional Director Felix Alicer on Wednesday said he will submit a consolidated plan to the local government unit to help address environmental issues on the island, which is known as a surfing destination.

He is keen to fast-track the solid waste management plan and the construction of sanitary landfills.

"After we have initial discussion with the governor, there was inspection conducted by a composite team...We are still trying to refine the action plan, a consolidated action plan for Siargao," Alicer said. - report from May Diez, ABS-CBN News
