A local employers' group claims many companies would rather shut down operations than allow their workers to telecommute.

This, despite labor officials urging companies to implement work-at-home programs amid the continued spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Sergio Ortiz-Luis of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines expressed doubts over the feasibility of remote work.

"It is looked at as last options, on extreme situations. Possibly if there is a lockdown. Unfortunately, even know, I think there are very few employers who would be going for telecommuting, precisely because of the nature of certain industries," Luis said.

"Obviously, manufacturing, you cannot do it, and some office works can be done. Most especially I think the BPOs, the call centers. Unfortunately I could understand the sentiment of many of the businessmen in this area. Our infrastructure, our internet is one of the worst," he added. - Future Perfect, ANC, March 11, 2020
