First brewed during 1876 in Sapporo, Hokkaido during the Meiji period by German-trained brewer Seibei Nakagawa,who be came Kaitakushi Brewery's first brewmaster. With the creation of the first Sapporo Lager in June 1876, it makes the beer brand the oldest in Japan. When it was privatized a decade later, the Sapporo brewery became the centerpiece for the Sapporo Beer Company.
