MANILA - The Duterte Cabinet and leaders of the Philippines' Catholic Church are ironing out plans to hold a dialogue on pressing national issues, including the war on drugs and the proposed return of the death penalty, an official of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said Sunday.

"Nasa table po iyan (It's on the table)," said CBCP Media Office director, Msgr. Pedro Quitorio of the dialogue.

"Ang Simbahan naman po kasi, kung makakatulong sa taumbayan, gagawin niya. It will go an extra mile to do that. It has been doing that since Martial Law," he added.

The President, Quitorio said, will not join the dialogue but is set to send his Cabinet secretaries in his stead.

Quitoro, however, said he cannot confirm the schedule of the planned talks.

Church leaders have drawn the President's ire due to their criticism of his anti-narcotics crackdown and push for the revival of capital punishment, lowering of the age for criminal liability and implementation of the Reproductive Health Law.
