MANILA, Philippines – University of the East (UE) guard Bonbon Batiller was benched by head coach Derrick Pumaren in their 71-79 loss to Adamson University after figuring in a near-scuffle with rookie teammate Omar Larupay during practice.

Batiller, who averages 10.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game for UE, was in uniform but did not see a single second of action as the Red Warriors suffered their eighth setback of the UAAP Season 79 tournament.

When asked as to Batiller's benching, Pumaren said it was a "coach's decision."

Batiller offered more details, admitting: "May kaaway ako na teammate sa last practice namin."

The second-year guard said no punches were thrown, though there was some light shoving. Batiller added that he and Larupay – who was also not at the venue last Saturday – have already talked things over.

"Nagkapikunan lang," Batiller explained. "Biruan lang."

Pumaren witnessed the incident, leading to the players being disciplined. "Okay na naman kami," Batiller said. "Na-settle naman na ni Manong."

Batiller, who has struggled to find consistency in his second season, stressed that being benched was not an issue for him even as he wanted to help his teammates.

"Expected ko na ipapasok ako," he said. "Pero coach's decision. Nire-respeto ko po."
