Dani Ravena

MANILA, Philippines – She may not have played in the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles' first game of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Collegiate Conference, but Dani Ravena's dreams and those of her famous family came true on Saturday nevertheless.

Even as she watched Ateneo's straight sets victory over Jose Rizal University from the reserve box, Dani relished the feeling of being included in the Lady Eagles' roster, and setting foot inside the FilOil Flying V Centre as a player, representing the blue-and-white while her mother, Mozzy Ravena, did color commentary on television.

"It's been a dream of ours," Dani said of her inclusion into the Lady Eagles' roster. "Before, I remember taking a picture of the San Juan Arena, and saying na, 'Soon, I'll play here.'"

"I wanted to get that feeling of representing your school, like my mom always talks about," she added. "It's been her dream for me also, to see me play. I'm happy that she's happy."

Her basketball-playing brothers, Kiefer and Thirdy, were even more excited than she was.

"They were really trying to get me pumped, kahit 'di ako sure if I'm going to play," Dani revealed.

The youngest Ravena is listed as Ateneo's second setter, tasked to back-up new starter Deanna Wong. While she is not expected to get too much minutes, Dani said she is always ready.

"Sa training, Coach Tai (Bundit) really drills in my mind to always be prepared," she said. "Although I'm the second setter, I should always prepare and think like I'm going to play. I can't just be relaxed all the time."

Yet there is no doubt that there is special pressure on Dani to succeed, just on the strength of her last name. Her parents, Bong and Mozzy, set a high bar during their own UAAP days, and the achievements of her older brothers have only set the standard even higher.

But Dani shrugged off the expectations. "I've grown up with the pressure," she said. "So it's not too difficult now."

"Now, it's not just the last name I'm representing, but also the school," she added. "That's how I think now – it doesn't matter if I'm a Ravena. It matters how I help my team."

But of course, Dani would also very much like to make a name for herself outside of her famous family, and she is willing to stay patient until she gets the opportunity to do just that.

"It's more of a motivation than pressure, that everyone is putting so much expectations on me," she said. "I just take it as motivation, kasi I want to prove that I can have a name for myself, and not just be 'the sister of,' or 'the daughter of.'"
