A favorite to win gold in the floor exercise event, Yulo bombed out of contention after failing to execute a difficult routine on Thursday, and finished seventh of eight finalists. He missed the podium in the vault as well, placing fourth.

With the 18-year-old falling short of expectations in these Games, his coach stressed the need for more intense preparation especially as they are now setting their sights on the world championships in October.

Yulo, who had won gold in the Doha leg of the World Cup series before arriving in these Games, offered no excuse for his subpar performance, acknowledging that he made a crucial error in his routine.
