JAKARTA — (UPDATED) The Philippines got its breakthrough victory in the volleyball competition of the 2018 Asian Games on Thursday at GOR Bulungan here.

The Philippines defeated Hong Kong in straight sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22, to stay in the hunt for a spot in the quarterfinals.

It was the Philippines’ first triumph in Asian Games volleyball since 1982, and it came following back-to-back losses to powerhouse squads Thailand and Japan.

“Sobrang thankful kay Lord kasi siyempre 'yung past two games namin medyo down, masama 'yung pakiramdam namin, pero everytime na nag-uusap kami, positive pa rin 'yung pinag-uusapan namin,” said head coach Shaq delos Santos.

“Honestly speaking, talagang kaya namin 'yung team (Hong Kong), kasi alam naman natin 'yung laro sa Pilipinas. So sabi ko labas lang natin kung ano merong laro (tayo),” he also said.

Alyssa Valdez had 14 points, Jaja Santiago added 12, and the Filipinas pounced on Hong Kong’s shaky reception to fire 11 aces.

Three of those came from Kianna Dy in the opening set, which allowed the Philippines to recover from a sluggish start, seize a 6-4 advantage, and cruise from there.

Hong Kong threatened late in the second and third sets but the Filipinas were able to make the key plays to preserve the win.

In Set 2, it was Majoy Baron and Jia Morado who conspired for the kill block that doomed Hong Kong.

In Set 3, Dy finished off a perfect combination play for the match-winner.

The Philippines had 45 kills to Hong Kong’s 37, and also had seven kill blocks.

At 1-2 in Pool A, the Philippines will next face Southeast Asian rival Indonesia on Saturday, August 25.
