MANILA, Philippines – Akari and Hapee Toothpaste have signed up for the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), making it an eight-team cast for the Open Conference that begins on July 1 at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Akari is linking up with Adamson University, while Hapee will be backstopped by players from the University of the Philippines (UP).

Jema Galanza, who played for Creamline in the Reinforced Conference, and Adamson coach Airess Padda will spearhead Akari's charge, while UP stars Isa Molde and Tots Carlos will join coach Jerry Yee in the Hapee side.

Hapee and Akari slug it out with the league's mainstays in Pocari Sweat, Creamline, Air Force, Perlas, Bali Pure, and the Power Smashers.

Pocari Sweat is once again the team to beat in the Open Conference, as the Lady Warriors are gunning for a fourth championship in as many stints in the league.

Meanwhile, it was announced Wednesday that the PVL will no longer allow players with Alien Certificate of Residence (ACR) to play in the Open Conference, thus blocking the stints of Perlas' Amy Ahomiro and Thailand's Pacharee Sangmuang.

Sports Vision president said that the PVL board voted against the so-called "ACR rule" in a meeting last Tuesday, thus disallowing foreigners who are permanent residents of the country and ACR holders to see action.

Ahomiro, a Kiwi national who played collegiate volleyball for Ateneo de Manila University, was supposed to play for the Perlas Spikers for the second straight conference.

Sangmuang had served as Air Force's import in the recently concluded Reinforced Conference, but was set to play for the Power Smashers in the Open Conference.

The new PVL ruling thus paves the way for the staging of an All-Filipino tournament.

"The rule has been changed about foreigners holding ACR. Teams voted that it should be all-Filipino, and that players should be Philippine passport holders," Palou said.
