The world-title bout between reigning world junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas and mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan is intriguing not just because of its historical significance, but also because of the distinct styles between the 2 boxers.

Fight analyst Ed Tolentino said Ancajas and Sultan are virtually as different as night and day.

“This will be a battle of contrasting styles. You have Ancajas, the skilled tactician who dissects foes with clinical precision. And then you have Sultan, who offers an unconventional style that almost borders on the kamikaze,” Tolentino told ABS-CBN News in a recent interview.

He said the outcome will greatly depend on who will be able to dictate the pace of the fight.

“You can see how the fight will go if we go by Ancajas' approach: he will break down Sultan like a math problem and by the middle rounds reduce him into nothing but a simple equation,” said Tolentino.

“It is Sultan who is the enigma here: he will try to crowd Ancajas, force to disrupt his rhythm by barging like a drunkard in an otherwise orderly saloon.”

The Ancajas-Sultan fight, which will take place in Fresno, Calif., on May 27 (Manila time), will be the first world championship bout between Filipinos in 93 years. The last time two Filipinos disputed for a world crown was when Pancho Villa defeated compatriot Clever Sencio by unanimous decision to retain his world flyweight crown in 1925.

Ancajas holds a 29-1-1 record with 20 KOs. He has defended his title 4 times since wresting the crown from McJoe Arroyo in 2016.

For Sultan, who has a record of 14-3 with 9 KOs, the bout is the biggest break of his career.

But Tolentino believes Ancajas has the upper hand.

“(Sultan) tends to wing and loop his punches, making him open for Ancajas' straight left. Madali hanapan ng butas ang defense ni Sultan,” he said.

“Sultan must narrow the distance and really crowd Ancajas on the inside. Sultan has the proverbial puncher's chance, but I see a late round stoppage or a points win for Jerwin.”
