(Updated) Always humble, 6-time best player of the conference winner June Mar Fajardo deflected credit on Friday after San Miguel Beer won the PBA Philippine Cup championship and he was awarded finals MVP.

Despite posting massive numbers in the Beermen's 108-99 win over Magnolia, Fajardo said a teammate of his deserved to be congratulated as the team's best player in Game 5.

“Dapat si Arwind (Santos) ang best player dito, siya ang naka-shoot ng pangtabla natin,” he said.

Fajardo may have a point.

If it weren't for Santos' 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in regulation, the series may have seen the light of Sunday and Fajardo's titanic game would've been for naught.

Santos finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 3 3-pointers.

But it's hard to ignore the impact that Fajardo left in the most important game in the tournament for the Beermen.

Fajardo ended up with a conference-high 42 points on 14-of-15 free-throw shooting to go with 20 rebounds in 54 minutes.

It's his nature to be uneasy when the focus is on his individual greatness, because he genuinely believes that basketball success requires a collaborative effort.

Winning games and being competitive usually mean a team has either one — that single generational talent but without much support, or a balanced and egalitarian roster but absent that one go-to force.

Winning championships, however, means having both. And San Miguel is fortunate to have a solid, talented core to go with a player that is the very definition of dominant.

“Para sa akin kaming lahat ng teammates ko ang best players, ibinigay namin lahat at hindi kami nag-give up,” Fajardo said.
