MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine ice hockey team on Thursday left for Sapporo, Japan to compete in the 2017 Asian Winter Games.

The contingent took a Philippine Airlines flight that will bring them to Sapporo via Haneda, Japan.

The Philippines will compete in Division II of the ice hockey event, where they will face off against eight other teams -- Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Indonesia, Iran, Macau, Malaysia, and Turkmenistan.

The Philippines are in Group A along with Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, and Qatar. Group round matches start on February 18, but the Philippines will debut on February 21 against Kyrgyzstan.
