MANILA, Philippines – For the first time in two seasons, the NCAA semifinals will be held in its traditional Final 4 format.

De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) denied Arellano University's bid for a sweep of the NCAA Season 93 women's volleyball tournament on Monday, with the Lady Blazers notching a stunning 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 25-12 win over the Lady Chiefs.

It was the first loss of the tournament for defending champion Arellano, which won its first seven matches and looked poised for a nine-game sweep after dominating San Beda College in its previous game.

But the Lady Chiefs ran into a well-prepared CSB squad on Monday, and the Lady Blazers stopped them in their tracks.

Four players scored in double-digits for CSB, led by skipper Ranya Musa's 17 points. Rachel Austero added 15 for the Lady Blazers, as they tallied 46 attacks to Arellano's 42.

This marks the first time in two years that the NCAA will have a Final 4 in women's volleyball. In the past two seasons, San Sebastian swept the elimination round, sending the Lady Stags straight to the finals while the rest of the semifinalists battled in the stepladder phase.

Their sweep of the elimination round never worked out for San Sebastian, however. They lost to CSB in Season 91, and to Arellano in Season 92. In both instances, they squandered a thrice-to-beat advantage in the championship round.

The Lady Chiefs, who had only two days of rest following their huge win over San Beda, faltered on offense against the Lady Blazers. They were the best spiking team in the NCAA heading into Monday's game, but could not get it going against CSB.

The loss marked the end of Arellano's 19-game winning streak, dating back to Season 92.

The Lady Blazers scored 11 kill blocks against Arellano, and had 11 service aces as well. Musa alone had five blocks, one more than the entire Arellano squad.

Jovielyn Prado had 14 points for the Lady Chiefs, who got a lifeline when they won the third set. But the Lady Blazers regrouped in the fourth frame en route to the dominant win.

Arellano dropped to 7-1, though they remain on top of the league standings. CSB improved to 4-3.
