MAGALLANES, Cavite—Coach Joven Jimenez wants to unveil a better version of Jerwin Ancajas, a more potent upgrade than the one that battered Jamie Conlan in Belfast last November.

That means a much more aggressive Ancajas capable of scoring more knockdowns to impress American fans.

“Gusto sana naming mahigitan niya ‘yung ginawa sa Belfast. Gusto namin siyang maging mas agresibo at mas masipag sumuntok,” said Jimenez, who oversaw Ancajas’ 6-round sparring session at Camp Survival in Magallanes on Friday.

“Gusto rin naming maging mabilis siyang mag-adjust kahit ano ang ibato ng kalaban niya.”

The Panabo City native is preparing for his much-awaited US debut against Israel “Jiga” Gonzalez on February 3.

He is coming off an impressive world junior bantamweight title defense against Conlan, who was previously unbeaten in 19 fights before losing to Ancajas.

Ancajas’ work rate proved too much for the aggressive Conlan that he was able to drop the Northern Irishman 3 times before going for the finisher in the 6th round.

Jimenez said his camp has already tapered down Ancajas’ training as he has already reached the peak of his preparations. Ancajas spent 3 rounds of sparring each against fellow Pinoy fighters Allan Alberca and Ernesto Saulong on Friday.

Against Alberca, Ancajas tested his hand speed and timing. Then he went toe-to-toe against Saulong to test how well he could defend while under heavy fire.

“OK naman ang ipinakita sa training. Nasa tamang direksyon siya. Gusto namin ‘yung pagsuntok niya, pagpasok, lalabas, makipagbakbakan sa harap,” said Jimenez.

“Handang handa na siya. Iniiwasan na lang naming siyang ma-overtrain o kaya maging overconfident.”

While he wants Ancajas to be more aggressive, Jimenez said he wants his fighter to concentrate on execution rather than being fixated on scoring a stoppage.

“‘Yung sa mga ipapagawa ko sa kanya sa laban, may posibilidad naming ma-knockout ang kalaban. Kung hindi naman, handa kaming tumagal ng 12 rounds.”
