MANILA, Philippines – Blackwater point guard Roi Sumang has earned PBA Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career after helping the Elite claim a hard-fought 103-100 victory over the Alaska Aces on Sunday.

Sumang, selected 27th overall by GlobalPort in 2015, is starting to live up to his potential for Blackwater this season after spending most of his rookie year in obscurity.

He played only 27 games for the Batang Pier, averaging 8.4 minutes per contest and producing underwhelming numbers of 3.4 points, 0.7 rebound, and 0.7 assist per game.

The former University of the East star appears to have found a home in Blackwater, however, and he has been a big part of the Elite's bench production.

Against the Aces, Sumang scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, including 10 in the final quarter, to help Blackwater claim their fifth victory of the conference.

The 26-year-old Sumang repeatedly attacked Alaska's defense with hard drives to the basket to help Blackwater establish a double-digit advantage in the final period. Although the Aces rallied to come to within one point late, Sumang and veteran teammate Denok Miranda sank crucial free throws in the end game to seal the win.

He was also a presence on the defensive end, coming through with three steals in the contest.

Sumang edged Mahindra's Philip Paniamogan, San Miguel's June Mar Fajardo, GlobalPort's Terrence Romeo, Ginebra's Joe Devance, Star's Allein Maliksi and Ian Sangalang, and Alaska's Calvin Abueva for the honor for the period of January 9 to 15.
