Filipino seaman dead in towboat fire in UAE

DUBAI -- A Filipino seaman died, while 2 other persons were injured in a towboat fire in the waters off Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

Authorities said the incident happened at past 4 in the morning on February 23 while the boat was on its way to India from Ajman.

It was reported that the boat had 8 crew members -- 6 Filipinos and 2 Indians -- when the fire happened.

The body of the Filipino crew member is now at the mortuary of the Fujairah Hospital.

Another Filipino crew member sustained minor burns while his Indian colleague was brought to the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The Philippine consulate in Dubai and Northern Emirates is currently gathering all information regarding the incident.

The Filipino crew members in the incident are all from Iloilo.

The identity of the fatality was withheld from the media as the family has not been informed yet.
