MANILA - (UPDATE) A six-year-old girl was confirmed to have died while 37 others were injured as a magnitude 6.9 quake struck Davao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, local officials said.

Several people were reportedly also trapped after a commercial building collapsed in the town of Padada.

In Brgy. Asinan in Matanao town, a girl identified as Cherbelchen Imgador, was killed after their house collapsed during the earthquake.

At least 3 are believed to be trapped after the Southern Trade Grocery and Hardware building collapsed in Padada.

Rescuers believe at least one of those trapped is still alive as the victim was still able to send a text message after the building caved in.

"We have sent already our disaster people to help in the rescue of these trapped people," Davao del Sur, Gov. Douglas Cagas said in an interview with ANC.

Cagas said the LGU's rescue teams have already been deployed to other areas affected by the quake.

The quake knocked out power in the provinces of Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental.

In Davao City, authorities closed off the Mahayahay Bridge along the diversion road after cracks were found on its structure.

In Koronadal City, 500 patients of the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital were evacuated following the quake and are now encamped on the hospital grounds.
