House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is in favor of another extension of martial law in Mindanao, citing security concerns in the region.

"Para sa akin, at siguro para na rin sa majority ng mga taga-Mindanao, gugustuhin na namin itong martial law kasi nga sa dami ng threats of terrorism, yung mga kidnapping d'yan, prevalent sa Mindanao," Alvarez said in an interview on radio DZMM.

Alvarez said residents actually feel safer under martial law.

"Halimbawa under martial law, gusto namin yung checkpoints from time to time kino-conduct ng ating military at kapulisan," he said.

Duterte declared the entire Mindanao under martial law on May 23, 2017 following clashes between government troops and terrorist groups in the Marawi City. This was also affirmed by the Supreme Court.

Congress, in a special joint session, granted the extension of martial law until December 31 on President Rodrigo Duterte's request.
