MANILA - Militants are poised to burn a 13-foot effigy of US President Donald Trump as he meets other world leaders in the capital on Monday.

The effigy depicts Trump with 4 arms that form a swastika sign, symbolizing "fascism, war, and plunder," Renato Reyes of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan said in a Facebook post.

The 4 arms of the effigy, which was created by artist group Ugat Lahi, could be seen spinning.

On Sunday, hundreds of protesters carrying placards declaring "Dump Trump" and "Down with US Imperialism" decried the participation of the American leader in the meeting of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders and their dialogue partners.

Police used water canons to prevent the activists from reaching the US embassy in Manila.

The Philippines will be Trump's last stop on a marathon tour that has taken him to Japan, South Korea, China, as well as Vietnam. Despite Trump's "America First" policy, the visit should provide some reassurance that Washington remains committed to a region that Beijing sees as its strategic domain.

Trump will meet Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila, where he will try to shore up relations strained by Duterte's anti-US sentiment and his enthusiasm for better ties with Russia and China.

The American leader earlier said he was prepared to mediate between claimants to the South China Sea, where 4 ASEAN countries and Taiwan contest China's sweeping claims to the busy waterway.
