BEIJING – President Rodrigo Duterte and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping walked side-by-side on the red carpet ahead of their first meeting at the Great Hall of the People here on Thursday.

Duterte’s visit is seen as a test of his plan to shift the Philippines’ alliance to China from its traditional ally, the United States. On Wednesday, the President said it was time to say “goodbye” to Washington.

Schoolchildren waving Philippine and Chinese flags welcomed Duterte to the Great Hall of the People, while honor guards stood at attention under an overcast sky.
