MANILA - Typhoon Lawin (international name Haima) has entered the Philippine area of responsibility, state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday afternoon.

The typhoon was located at 1,155 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes as of 5:30 p.m.

PAGASA said it is not ruling out the possibility that Lawin may become a super typhoon, meaning it may pack maximum sustained winds of more than 220 kilometers per hour, as it approaches the Philippine landmass.

According to the latest weather bulletin, Lawin is currently packing maximum sustained winds of up to 175 kph and gusts of up to 215 kph.

Lawin is moving west northwest at 24 kph, and is expected to make landfall over Cagayan on October 20 before hitting Ilocos Norte and Apayao.
