MANILA -- Dr. Lourdes Quisumbing, the former secretary of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, passed away Saturday. She was 96.

Aside from serving as Education secretary under the administration of former president Corazon Aquino, Quisumbing was also the secretary-general of the UNESCO National Commission in the Philippines.

Known in the field of education, Quisumbing served as dean of St. Theresa's College, chairman of Graduate Education at University of San Carlos, dean of the Graduate School of Education at De La Salle University Manila and president of Maryknoll College (now Miriam College) in Quezon City.

Quisumbing is survived by eight of her 10 children, 27 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and three great-great grand children.
