Typhoon “Karen” (international name “Sarika”) made landfall over Baler, Aurora at 2:30 AM Sunday, based on the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Tagaytay Doppler radar.

“Karen” was forecast to move west-northwest at 22 kilometers per hour (KPH). It had maximum sustained winds of up to 150 KPH near the center and gustiness of up to 210 KPH.

PAGASA estimated the rainfall amount to be from moderate to heavy within the typhoon’s 500-kilometer diameter.

Tropical cyclone warning signal (TCWS) #3 was raised over Pangasinan, Northern Zambales, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Northern Quezon including Polillo Island, La Union, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino.

TCWS #2 was raised over Ilocos Sur, Southern Isabela, Mt Province, Ifugao, rest of Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Rizal, Metro Manila, rest of Quezon and Camarines Norte.

TCWS #1 was raised over Ilocos Norte, Abra, Kalinga, rest of Isabela, Southern Apayao, Southern Cagayan, Oriental Mindoro, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Marinduque and Camarines Sur.

The agency also warned that there could be possible occurrence of storm surges along the coastal communities of areas with TCWS #3 and #2. In addition, flashfloods and landslides are expected over all areas with TCWSs.

PAGASA is also monitoring another tropical storm with international name “Haima”, estimated at 1,550 kms east of Mindanao. It was expected to enter the eastern boundary of the Philippine area of responsibility by Monday and would then be called “Lawin.”
