JOLO, Sulu - A massive fire razed some 3,500 houses in 2 seaside communities here, local authorities said Wednesday.

The blaze reportedly started Tuesday afternoon at a coffee shop and quickly spread to houses made of light materials in Barangays Busbus and Walled City, which are both "heavily populated", said ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman.

The Bureau of Fire Protection, in a text message to ABS-CBN News, confirmed the number of destroyed homes, adding that "thousands" of families were left homeless by the blaze that was extinguished late Tuesday.

Authorities have yet to receive reports of any fatalities in the fire, said Hataman.
