5 Pinoy seafarers injured in South Africa brawl, DFA says

MANILA - Five Filipino seafarers were injured in a brawl in Cape Town, South Africa, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday.

Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato confirmed the incident after he received information from Ambassador to South Africa Joseph Gerald Angeles.

The victims reportedly figured an altercation with Indonesian seafarers that led to a brawl on Friday. Motive of the incident remains unclear.

Three of the Filipino seafarers sustained serious physical injuries and are still confined in the intensive care unit of a local hospital.

Honorary Consul in Cape Town Steven Chaimowitz has visited the victims and is scheduled to visit their employment agencies.
