24 barangays in Cotabato City to be placed under state of calamity

Flood has still not subsided in 24 villages in Cotabato City due to continuous rains and overflowing of rivers

COTABATO CITY – Twenty-four barangays here have been flooded for five days due to continuous rains and overflowing of rivers caused by the intertropical convergence zone.

Mayor Cynthia Guiani said the city council will pass a resolution on the city's regular session on Tuesday to place the affected areas under a state of calamity.

Guiani has also ordered the evacuation of about 1,000 families who live along the rivers and their transfer to a temporary shelter built by barangay officials.

According to the city agriculture office, P5 million worth of crops were damaged.

The city disaster risk reduction and management council said 18,684 families were affected.

The local government has handed out food packs to families and has conducted medical missions.

The following villages are: Barangay Mother Poblacion, Poblacion 1, Poblacion 2, Poblacion 3, Poblacion 7, Poblacion 8, Poblacion 9, Rosary Heights 2, Rosary Heights 3, Rosary Heights 5, Rosary Heights 6, Rosary Heights 7, Rosary Heights 8, Rosary Heights 9, Mother Barangay Tamontaka, Tamontaka 1, Tamontaka 2, Tamontaka 3, Tamontaka 4, Tamontaka 5, Mother Barangay Bagua, Bagua 2, Bagus 3 and Kalanganan 1.

Flooding in the city is expected to subside in two weeks' time according to the CDRRMC.
