MANILA (UPDATED) - President Rodrigo Duterte passed through the x-ray and metal scanners at Manila airport like a common passenger as he flew home to Davao City late Thursday.

The president, in a brown shirt with the top buttons undone and sleeves rolled up, raised his hands to be frisked as he entered the departure area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, a video posted by his communications office showed.

By undergoing security check at NAIA, Duterte wants to set an example to other officials to shun VIP treatment, according to Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.

"That's right. President Rody Duterte walks his talk. He is the epitome of a good public servant," Andanar said in a text message.

People shook his hand and took pictures with their smartphones as he walked to the boarding gate, accompanied by his security detail, the video shows.

Duterte then sat on the window side of a three-seat row in what appeared to be the premium economy section of the Philippine Airlines flight PR1825.

The plane left Manila past 10 p.m.

He attended the Hari Raya festival in Davao on Friday evening. - With a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
