MANILA - Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community waved rainbow flags for the annual pride march on Saturday to press for equal rights and condemn discrimination.

Homosexuality is tolerated but not totally accepted in the Philippines, where gay marriage is illegal. Roughly 80 percent of the country's 100 million people are Catholic.

Singing sensation Charice Pempengco this week revealed his male transgender name, Jake Zyrus, and earned condemnation from his grandmother.

Champion boxer and devout Christian Manny Pacquiao commented early last year that gays were "worse than animals," provoking a firestorm of criticism that led to the termination of his endorsement deal with Nike. He was later elected senator.
