MANILA - Former Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) chairperson Camilo Sabio was found guilty of graft for the alleged anomalous lease of vehicles in 2007 and 2009.

The Sandiganbayan First Division sentenced Sabio to 12 to 20 years of imprisonment for 2 counts of graft.

PCGG in 2007 rented 3 Hyundai Starex, one Toyota Altis and one Toyota Innova for P5.93 million for 36 months.

In 2009, the agency entered another lease contract worth P6.73 million for six vehicles.

Some of the vehicles were used by Sabio and several other PCGG officials.

The Office of the Ombudsman in 2011 charged Sabio and 4 others with graft for supposedly failing to hold a bidding process for the contracts.

Tagged in the charges were PCGG commissioners Tereso Javier, Narciso Nario and Nicasio Conti. Another accused, former Commissioner Ricardo M. Abcede, passed way in 2012.

The 81-year-old Sabio will appeal the decision of the Sandigabayan. -- Report from Zhander Cayabyab, DZMM
