MANILA - Aspiring political parties for the 2019 elections should file their petitions for registration on July 15, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced Wednesday.

The deadline for the filing of petitions for registration for a coalition of political parties meanwhile is on Aug. 31.

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez reminded political parties that failed to participate in the 2013 and 2016 polls to take note of the announced deadlines.

Under Section 8, Rule 32 of the poll body's rules of procedure, the registration of any political party or coalition of political parties may be cancelled after due notice and hearing upon “failure to field official candidates in the last two preceding elections or failure of their candidates to obtain at least five (5) per centum of the votes cast in the last two preceding elections,” among other grounds.

There are currently 169 registered or accredited political parties nationwide, latest data from the Clerk of the Commission showed.

Voter registration, meanwhile, will resume on July 2 and will end on Sept. 29.
