Firefight erupts between AFP, Maute group in Lanao del Sur

MANILA -- (UPDATED) A firefight erupted between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the remnants of the Maute group in Tubaran, Lanao del Sur Sunday.

According to Col. Romeo Brawner Jr., there is an ongoing firefight and airstrike against the remnants of the Maute-ISIS group led by Humam Abdul Romato Najid, alias Abu Dar.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) assemblyman Zia Adiong said local disaster officials are already helping the civilians fleeing the area.

Based on initial information from the provincial government of Lanao del Sur, around 500 families from Tubaran were evacuated.

Affected barangays in Tubaran are Wago, Guiarong Tubaran, Malaganding, Tubaran Proper, Madaya, Gaput, Dinaigan and Alog.

In the town of Pagayawan, around 255 families were displaced, with 57 families currently in evacuation centers.

There are also some residents trapped in Barangays Padas and Diampaca in Pagayawan.

The firefight reportedly erupted in Barangay Guiarong, which is located in the boundary of Tubaran and Pagayawan towns.

Affected barangays in Pagayawan are Padas, Guiarong Pagayawan, Linindingan, Diampaca, Bangon, and Madang.

A toral of 723 families, or 3,571 individuals from Tubaran and Pagayawan are currently being accommodated in Binidayan town.

Governor Bedjoria Soraya Alonto Adiong has ordered local disaster officials to provide necessary response and assistance to affected residents.

She also asked her constituents to stay calm and to pray for everyone's safety.

Tubaran town is near the town of Butig, the stronghold of the Maute-ISIS group.

Abu Dar is the new emir of ISIS in Southeast Asia who reportedly replaced Isnilon Hapilon who was killed in Marawi.
