MANILA - Large sections of the country will experience occasionally heavy rains Thursday as tropical depression Domeng threatened to enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat, the state weather bureau said.

At 3 a.m., Domeng was spotted 605 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, packing top sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and 60 kph gusts, PAGASA meteorologist Chris Perez told DZMM.

The storm will enhance the habagat later Thursday until the weekend, bringing rains to the western section of Luzon and Visayas, Perez said.

For now, the 2 weather systems and the monsoon trough will dump occasionally heavy rains that may trigger floods and landslides in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western and Eastern Visayas and the provinces of Aurora, Bataan and Zambales, PAGASA said.

The monsoon trough and habagat will also bring light to moderate rains over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Visayas.

Mindanao, meanwhile, may experience localized thunderstorms.

Floods have swamped parts of Metro Manila amid the bad weather, stalling some vehicles in busy roads.

The bad weather has also forced the cancellation of classes in some areas.

Domeng is unlikely to hit land and will leave the country on Sunday if it continues moving north northwest at 15 kph, said the weather office.
