MANILA - A word to the wise: Be friendly, but be careful.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday cautioned Filipino soldiers and police of their camaraderie with their counterparts from the United States.

"Keep your camaraderie with them, the ties that bind you, but remember America is not a country that is really consistent also," he said in his speech in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

The President led the groundbreaking ceremony of Vista Alegre Homes, a housing program for some 1,000 uniformed personnel.

His gripe stemmed after former US President Barack Obama criticized him.

"Kaya nagalit ako. P***** i** mo Obama ka, letse ka, go to hell," Duterte said.

He said the problem with Americans is "they think they are a separate kind from the rest of the world."

"Maski anong pretension, lumalabas ang kanilang pagka-bigots," Duterte added.

The Philippines and US have a mutual defense treaty signed on August 30, 1951.

Article II of the treaty prescribed that both countries "separately and jointly by self-help and mutual aid will maintain and develop their individual and collective capacity to resist armed attack."

On Friday, the Philippines and the US formally ended this year's Balikatan exercise. Over 8,000 Filipino and American soldiers joined the training along with participants from Australia and Japan.
