MANILA - The mayor of Daanbantayan, Cebu has given authorities names of suspects who may be behind the attempt to assassinate him and his family last Sunday, the police said Tuesday.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said Daanbantayan Mayor Vicente Loot attributed the attack to allegations that he was a narco-politician.

Loot is a retired police general and among politicians who President Rodrigo Duterte had tagged as one of the alleged "narco-generals" or police officials involved in the narcotics trade.

“Hindi pa siya nagbigay ng formal statement but they were able to initially discuss at mayroon siyang binabanggit na possible. Number 1 [motive] is personal grudge, politics and pagiging nasa listahan ng narco-politics,” Albayalde said.

He said Loot also suspects that an active police officer was behind the attack.

“So ito lahat tinitingnan natin. Galing sa kaniya 'yung information na iyon,” Albayalde said.

(So we are looking at all of these. That information came from him.)

The PNP has provided additional security for Loot and his family, who survived the slay attempt. The incident injured a driver and a helper.

The PNP does not consider the assassination attempt on Loot to be election-related even as it happened on the eve of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.
