MANILA - A Muslim leader, who was supposedly the target of the blasts in Quiapo on Saturday, confirmed to the police that he received threats prior to the incident.

According to Manila Police District (MPD) director Chief Supt. Joel Coronel, Atty. Nasser Abinal told them that the threats he got via social media were likely connected to his job as imam.

"Sa kanya pong tanggapan nakapangalan, doon po ipinadala 'yung pasabog," Coronel told DZMM on Sunday.

"Ang sinabi niya ay meron daw mga tao o grupo na nagbabanta sa kanya through Facebook and social media dahil sa kanyang gawain bilang imam," he added.

Coronel said the blasts in Quiapo, which left 2 people dead and 6 others injured, were not likely acts of terrorism since the bomb was intended for a specific target.

He added that if it were an act of terrorism, the culprits would have placed the bombs in a more crowded area.

"Kung terror attack po ito, nilagay ito sa isang lugar na magdudulot ng malaking pinsala. Hindi po natin ito ma-consider as terror attack as of the moment," he said.

The first explosion occurred at the corner of Globo De Oro and Palanca Street around 5:55 p.m., while the second one took place at Elizondo Street at about 8:25 p.m.

Coronel said the two blasts are likely connected to each other but they have not yet established if these explosions were connected to the one that happened last April 28.

"Checkpoints are being conducted. Sini-search namin lahat ng lumalabas at pumapasok. Meron din tayong coordination being made with the Armed Forces and intelligence units," he said.

Authorities have locked down the streets affected by the explosion as they begin post-blast investigation to determine the bomb used and the suspects behind the incident.

Coronel asked residents in Quiapo to relay any information they have about the explosions to the police.

"MPD is on full alert along with other units sa area. Kung meron pa kayong mapaghihinalang tao o bagay, ipagalam lang po sa amin," he said.
