AFP overruns Maute-Abu Sayyaf encampment in Lanao del Sur

AFP says leader among 36 terror suspects slain in clashes

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has overrun an encampment of combined forces of the terror-linked Abu Sayyaf and Maute groups in Piagapo town, Lanao del Sur, following a firefight Saturday morning.

In a press conference, 1st Tabak Division Commander General Rolando Joselito Bautista said they recovered war materiel, components for improvised explosive devices, cellphones, cameras, uniforms, a jihadists' flag commonly used by the Islamic State, and passports of an Indonesian national.

The military also retrieved two bodies in the area, one of which is believed to be a foreigner.

Bautista said they have to further verify the foreigner's identity.

Philippine Army 103rd Brigade Commander Nixon Fortes said the terror groups were led by two men, namely Abu Dar, who coordinates with foreign terrorists, and Imam Bantayaw, who coordinates with members of Maute and Abu Sayyaf.

Bantayaw was allegedly killed in the gun fight.

The military said 36 of the 162 members of the terror groups were killed.
