Protesters picket in Baguio City's Sunshine Park to ask 5 justices to inhibit themselves from the quo warranto proceedings against Chief Justice Sereno. Noel Gapasin

BAGUIO CITY - Local and national groups on Tuesday gathered in this city's Sunshine Park to rally against the quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Pastor Caloy Dino, a convenor of the Coalition for Justice group, said the quo warranto petition is unconstitutional and has no basis.

Former Bayan Muna Party-list Rep. Teddy Casiño claimed that Duterte’s clamor to boot out Sereno was a form of tyranny, especially after the President declared he is an enemy of the chief magistrate.

“Parang nagiging effort na ito ni Duterte na magkaroon ng one-man rule, na hindi naman dapat. Nagiging tyranny na ang ginagawa niya,” he said.

The group will rally in front of the Baguio compound of the Supreme Court to appeal to the justices to junk the petition filed against Sereno.

Sereno's colleagues will hold oral debates in their summer office to tackle Calida’s quo warranto petition.

Sereno is expected to arrive at the oral argument together with her lawyer. Calida will also attend today’s proceedings.
