MANILA - Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa on Monday condemned the supposed hazing of police academy cadets by their upperclassmen as revealed in a video published online.

Dela Rosa said the seniors seemed to be enjoying manhandling the cadets in the video. He underscored that the PNP "abhors" hazing in any form as it promotes a culture of violence.

"Gusto ko lang kayo prangkahin na we abhor hazing. That's a culture of violence. Hindi po maganda yan, kaya klaruhin natin yan," he told reporters in a press briefing.

Dela Rosa added that he himself does not want his son, Rock, who is currently a cadet, to experience such violence inside the police academy.

"For me, ayaw ko nga madapuan ng lamok ang anak ko kapag natutulog, kahit na madaling araw, gumigising ako para kunin yung kumot ng anak ko at tatabunan ko kasi nalalamigan," he said.

But if there is such practice that is part of his son's training in the academy, as long as it is legal and authorized, the country's top cop said he will accept it.

"If that will make my son more of a man, kung may maexperience siyang ganun, well, I have to accept it kung 'yan ang kasama sa training nila," he said.

Dela Rosa stressed that there are a lot of trainings in the academy that can make you tough without hazing. There are also initiations rites, he added, that are sanctioned and organized by the PNPA.

A board of inquiry has already been formed to investigate the alleged hazing video, and the mauling incident involving underclassmen and newly graduate cadets.
