MANILA - Two members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter with the military Saturday night, the military said Sunday.

A squad of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) Active Auxiliary of San Andres Patrol Base encountered the rebels past 11 p.m. in Barangay San Andres in Lopez town, Quezon.

The troops were conducting night patrol in the area when the rebels opened fire at them.

An explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) followed, resulting in the death of two unidentified NPA rebels.

Military troops recovered an M-16 rifle, an AK47, a hand grenade, a rifle grenade, a handheld radio and three combat pack.

A CAFGU member was also wounded in the incident and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

Members of the 85th Infantry Battalion are currently conducting a hot pursuit operation against the fleeing rebels.

According to the military, the encounter was designed by the rebels to divert the attention of government forces who were busy securing the area for Catholic devotees observing Holy Week.

Meanwhile, the 201st Infantry Brigade extended their deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those killed.

“This brigade encourages CNTs (CPP-NPA terrorists) to lay down their arms and live peacefully with their families and we will ensure your safety and well-being,” Colonel Escarcha, Commander of 201st Brigade, said.

The 201st Infantry Brigade, together with the provincial government of Quezon and other stakeholders, promotes peace and peaceful resolution of conflict through the conduct of consultations and community-based peace dialogues.
