MANILA - The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday said it has prepared for possible attacks by the New People's Army (NPA) ahead of the latter's 50th founding anniversary on Thursday.

"Nakahanda tayo diyan, pinaghanda natin yung ating mga kapulisan at yung mga local government na maging alerto. Alam naman natin na kapag nagsasagawa ng anibersaryo ang CPP (Communist Party of the Philippines)-NPA ay gumagawa sila ng mga bayolenteng pag-atake at may atrocities," DILG officer-in-charge Eduardo Año told radio DZMM.

Aside from the police, Año said the agency has coordinated with the military and has put up almost 3,000 public assistance centers nationwide.

"About 27,000 policemen dineploy nationwide para sigurado yung mga uuwi ng probinsya ay ligtas sa kanilang pagbiyahe," he said.

"We will make sure yung mga vulnerable targets ay na-reinforced, alerto ang kapulisan at hinihiling sa mga kababayan na tumulong po tayo kung meron tayong nakikitang anumang pwedeng ireport, ipagbigay alam sa malapit na istasyon ng pulisya at gagawan natin ng kaukulan ng aksyon."

The NPA will mark its 50th anniversary on March 29, Holy Thursday.

The police earlier warned of the supposed reactivation of the New People's Army's (NPA) Special Partisan Unit (Sparu), an urban hit squad targeting law enforcers, government officials, and volunteers.

This followed the collapse of peace negotiations between the government and communist rebels in November, with the President declaring the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the NPA collectively as a terror group.
