MANILA - The Court of Appeals has issued an order restraining the deposition of convicted drug trafficker Mary Jane Veloso in Indonesia, her lawyer said Monday.

"It is with utter disappointment and unfathomable frustration to learn that the Philippine Court of Appeals, upon the instance of the recruiter's defense, just recently issued an order restraining the long overdue deposition of convicted migrant worker Mary Jane Veloso in Indonesia," Atty. Edre Olalia said in a statement.

Olalia said Veloso's legal team will not stop until Veloso gets a chance to speak the truth.

"We shall not stop exhausting all fair legal means in combination with decisive political action to ensure that she is allowed to speak the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth," he said.

He also asked for justice and fairness for his client.

"A victim of injustice several times over, distressed migrant workers like Mary Jane expect from her compatriots not only to uphold fairness, reason & justice but also to demonstrate empathy and conscience at the very least," Olalia said.

In February, the Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 88 granted the prosecution's motion to take Veloso's testimony.

The deposition was supposed to be taken at the at the Yogyakarta prison and upon due and proper arrangement.

Veloso was scheduled to be executed in 2015 for charges of drug trafficking but was spared from capital punishment after her alleged recruiter surfaced.

Last year, Indonesian President Joko Widodo met with President Rodrigo Duterte and said the latter gave him the "go ahead" on the case of convicted drug mule Mary Jane Veloso.

Widodo, in an interview with reporters, said "Well, President Duterte said to go ahead, process it in accordance with Indonesian law..."

However, the Palace denied that Duterte gave his "go-ahead" for the execution of Veloso.

Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said what Duterte told Widodo was that he would not interfere in Indonesia's legal processes.

Veloso's family had appealed to Duterte to save her from execution in Indonesia, saying it was his duty as father of the nation.
