MANILA - The Philippine Coast Guard is beefing up its anti-drug efforts ahead of an expected influx of passengers this summer.

Commander Armand Balilo, spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard said they received instructions from their officer-in-charge, Commodore Joel Garcia to intensify their operations against illegal drugs in support of the government’s anti-drug campaign.

Balilo said they might conduct random drug testing and inspection among their crew to ensure that personnel are drug-free and will also train K-9 dogs to detect illegal drugs.

“Baka mag surprise drug test sa mga crew pag nakatambay lang yung mga barko diyan para malaman natin kung sila ay fit at walang bahid ng drugs habang nagpapatakbo ng barko,” Balilo told DZMM on Saturday.

He added that the Coast Guard will also work with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in its anti-illegal drugs campaign.

Balilo said they will also implement stricter inspection of vessels at sea and will augment forces to help man passenger vessels.
