A lethal nighttime earthquake in Surigao del Norte created a rocky wall that stretched for 1 kilometer in Sitio Cabugsawon, Poblacion in San Francisco town, the state seismological agency said Wednesday.

Fault movement during Friday's magnitude 6.7 quake caused a "ground rupture" that pushed up the ground and created the wall, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told ANC's Beyond Politics that the rupture stretches along the Anao-aon Bridge, which straddles the Surigao segment of the Philippine fault.

The rupture, he added, is also responsible for splitting the bridge.

Ground ruptures are among the common hazards of strong quakes that originate along faults.

It may manifest as fissures extending up to tens of kilometers, or as a series of discontinuous crackS, mounds or depressions.

The length of ground rupture and the width of the zone of deformation generally increase with the magnitude of earthquake, Phivolcs said.
